VOLUNTEER INTERNSHIP POSITION(S): MUSEUM (Unpaid)

Overview:  The Benicia Historical Museum (BHM) at the Camel Barns is a private, nonprofit local history Museum housed in four original pre-statehood military buildings which are a California Historical Landmark and on the National Register of Historic Places.  The Museum is currently seeking Volunteer Museum Associates (VSAs) to work 1-4 PM Saturdays and Sundays, with occasional evenings and weekdays (Wednesday – Sunday, 1-4 PM) or other times for school tours and events.  VSAs actively engage with visitors at the Museum’s admissions desk and serve as the face of the Museum. VSAs  are responsible for processing admissions, gift shop sales, ticket events, and Museum membership; providing visitors with information about exhibits and upcoming events; and facilitating in providing an overall welcoming environment.  The position requires availability on weekends, some holidays, and occasional events; weekday VSAs may be asked to help with school tours, hands-on reenactment activities, research, exhibit installation and/or office administration duties.  This position is ideal for a current college student wishing to build his or her academic or professional resume, especially if enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program leading to a degree in the areas of education, hospitality, history, political science, or museum studies.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsibility to complete daily opening and closing procedures; “key holder”
  • Cash handling/cash register; maintain accurate monetary transactions including fees for admission, group tour admissions, new memberships, and gift shop processing; maintain accurate gift shop sales accounts/inventory
  • Assist with visitor evaluation, visitor tracking, and attendance studies as required
  • Sell memberships to the Museum that support the Museum’s operating costs
  • Provide initial orientation to the Museum; helpful and friendly service to visiting Museum patrons
  • Become knowledgeable about Museum exhibits, facility rentals, upcoming events and provide information to the public on same
  • Assist with Museum office and archival research projects – (as needed/during slow periods)
  • Dress in clean and presentable attire
  • Helps to maintain the Museum’s exhibit spaces
  • Able to enforce and respond to safety and security practices, issues and concerns as they relate to visitors, staff, volunteers and to exhibits, artifacts, buildings and grounds
  • Performs other work-related duties and projects as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 18 years of age with reliable transportation
  • Punctual, responsible, flexible, courteous, able to work independently
  • A diplomatic and pleasant demeanor at all times essential; customer service- oriented
  • Confidence and comfort dealing with members of the public, including children and seniors, Museum staff and volunteers; people with disabilities/handicapped
  • Strong organizational skills; able to follow direction
  • Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office software
  • Cashier and customer service experience preferred
  • Currently enrolled student in relevant area of academic study preferred
  • Prior sales, customer service, hospitality and experience working with the public preferred
  • Ability to commit to a fixed weekly schedule
  • Background check/personal references may be required
